When will my baby walk?

Most babies take their first steps around the time of their first birthday and are walking well by the time they’re 14 months or 15 months old. Don’t worry if your child takes a little longer. Many children don’t walk until they are 17 months or 18 months old.

Learning to walk is a big leap into a new-found independence for your baby. It marks the change from being a baby to becoming a toddler.

Wriggles and Giggles deliver face to face group sessions in Yarm, Hartburn, Ingleby Barwick that you can join by booking a sessions that best suits you, if you are a parent or carer to an early years child from birth. All areas of learning are covered for your child's development and your own understanding of how that happens and how to get the best outcome for them with your parenting techniques.

When your baby takes her first steps she will need some help. She will hold on to your hands or a sturdy push-along toy, or she will cruise using furniture for support.

It will probably take your baby several more months to develop the confidence and balance she needs to take her first solo steps. And it will be another few months before her walking becomes more controlled and steady.

By 15 months the average toddler is walking unaided, though her steps may be uneven. At this stage, she may also like to push toys while she toddles along.

At 25 months or 26 months, you will notice your child’s steps have become more even. By this age she will have got the hang of the smooth heel-to-toe motion that adults use.

By the time your child’s third birthday comes around, many of her basic movements will have become second nature. Standing, running or jumping will be relatively easy. However, some actions, such as standing on tiptoes or on one foot, might still require more concentration and effort.

Bear in mind that babies develop differently, some more quickly than others. If you’re concerned about your baby’s development, or if your child isn’t walking by 18 months, talk to your GP or health visitor.
